In fact, part of the alignment of the present day Croydon tram system
re-uses part of the
alignment of the Surrey Iron railway, one of the UK's earliest public
railways which initially
was a horse-drawn ramway principally carrying iron ore.

And there is a road in Mitcham alongside the new Croydon Tramlink
called "Tramway Path" which refers to the original Surrey Iron Railway
not the current Croydon tramway!! I will be driving past it tomorrow
evening on the way to Wimbledon Model Railway Club!
