Zürich HB Platforms 51-54 (was Re: SBB 2014 timetable changes)

Martin Baumann

I emailed the project team for the Durchmesserlinie who confirm that all four of these platforms will remain in service until 14.06.2014. The clearance under the temporary bridge must be sufficient for trains to run. (Test trains and driver training is due to start in December)

Immensee to Arth Goldau should be open from start of traffic tomorrow (05.06.2013)

Today's Railways (Europe) has an article detailing MGB investment plans, which mentions upcoming upgrading and resulting closures of the Furka Base Tunnel. It doesn't detail what will happen to the GEX during these closures. I assume diversion over the DFB is not possible :-)

Latest coach withdrawls

Martin Baumann

Football coach BR 50 85 85-35 001-2 has been withdrawn and as of yesterday was stored at Stein-Säckingen awaiting onward transport to Kaiseraugust scrapyard [How often was this used after conversion, always seemed to be dumped at Zürich Herdern?]

Also withdrawn are the last two driving trailers that were rebuilt from EWI B: 82-33 951 and 953 along with five more driving trailers from series 82-33 920

This means there are currently 39 driving trailers left for EWI or EWII sets:

82-33 913 917 919 921 922 923 925 927 928 929 931 932 933 936 961 962 966 970 974 976 981 to 992

82-34 900 901 902 904 905 906 907

82-34 906 and 907 are used on Brig-Iselle car trains. Of the remaining 37 only 12 are required for scheduled trains with a few more on standby sets (Dispozüge)

Examining google images shows this to be partially correct. Access to platforms 51 and 52 is possible without crossing the temporary bridge.

Thank you, does seem that nothing is removed so like Martin, I am unclear
as to why the Durchmesse line (from Bahnhof Lowenstrasse as described in
some publications) cannot open with 51-4 (Referred in some publications as

The tracks to platforms 51-54 cross over the ramp down in to the
Löwenstrasse station on a temporary bridge. This bridge will have to be
removed before the new underground tracks can be put in service as it is to
low.

Immensee to Arth Goldau expected to be closed until start of traffic on Thursday due to a landslide

The top section of the Rorschach Heiden line is also closed due to a landslide but is expected to be open tomorrow.

Rheineck-Walzenhausen and sections of the Appenzellerbahn that were closed have reopened this afternoon.

The situation in Germany and especially Austria is much worse and this will cause some knock-on disruption within Switzerland

That is correct now. In previous years there were peak hour extra trains on this route doing such things as Altstetten-Schaffhausen and there was a very early through train from Bern direct to Zürich Flughafen.

It is frequently used for diversions if there is a problem on another route. For instance on 09.01.2012 I had 450 085 (S12) from Winterthur to Altstetten via Flughafen and this section of track due to a line closure at Stettbach

Not too many actual railway shots here, but a slideshow of no less than 69 pictures proves the extent of the problems:

Assuming that by 'from the west' you mean via Altstetten, then most of these trains currently reverse in the main section of Hauptbahnhof (tracks 3-18).

However the obvious exception is an hourly InterRegio between Basle and Zurich Airport that avoids Hauptbahnhof altogether, running via the direct link from Altsetetten to the Käferberg tunnel. I think these are the only passenger trains to use that link.

I guess these will either be dropped or rerouted via Hauptbahnhof come 2016.

White or rather black and white? And I assume the dining car was red and

If I'm correct, it still follows the left river bank of the RhineLorelei etc.

Interesting way of returning from Switserland to Belgium.

Thanks for the correction. I see now that the one-seat ride from Chur to
Kiel on EC 2 only runs on Sundays. So last Wednesday I saw EC 8, whose
destination was indeed shown as Hamburg, not Kiel.

June Month End celebrations

Keith Hookham <keith47424@...>

As it is not too long before the end of the month and the BLS and RhB celebrations I thought I would have a look at the timetables to see if anything has been put in there yet so I could sort out some moves.
I notice on the RhB website that they have a brochure out. http://www.rhb.ch/fileadmin/user_upload/Community/Events/100_Jahre_Bever-Scuol/Festprogramm_100_Jahre_Bever-Scuol.pdf which details that there are two specials out. a krok and also 353. I take it that normal day tickets are valid on these services?

As for the BLS I have not seen anything really for the 100 year of the Lötschberg. I note on the BLS website it states that there will be more information in April but as we are now in June???
However I believe that there is supposed to be a half hourly shuttle from Frutigen to Kandersteg? If true any ideas what traction will do this? Historic or modern? I would hope historic as I have also heard a rumour that there maybe a shuttle using 205 & 208 in Top n tail mode?

I also note that on the SBB timetable there is an hourly service to Spiez (sometimes extended to Bern) running as either an EXT service or R30xxx service. There also appears to be a couple of EXT to Brig. Again modern or historic traction is not known.

So not much information for BLS which is a shame as I would hope that this is a very popular event on a mainline.

I think that the main thing they are in the way of is a major urban redevelopment program. Certainly last year that part of the station was decorated with large posters illustrating the new streets and buildings that were to be created on the site of platforms 51-54.

That's the point. Neither the tourist nor the resident will use a GEX for a travel from Thusis to Fiesch. If they would, there wouldn't be a problem with subsidies.
