Only the mechanical part was SLM as on all others but electrical part was AEG of Germany. This is why the controls were different and only Samedan drivers were instructed to drive it. Therefor it is interesting that the locomotive was rebuilt in the same way. But as it seems, the AEG part of the locomotive could be reused. 391 finally ended up "back" in Germany, it is now in the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RhB_391_1.jpg> Markus, Grbetal

Alan wrote: ' "The Diver" actually. And it continued to run under the

But 224 was renumbered - to 1192 - although not until 1913, so it was many years later; the disaster happening in 1879. Funny how the memory plays tricks over the years, isn't it? I am sure I read somewhere that once rebuilt, it was kept as far away from the Tay as possible, but I can't find the reference to that in either 'Scottish 4-4-0s' or 'the High Girders'. Not that it matters on this forum, of course. My real point, however, was that wry humour is so often the way that people cope with tragedy. I would doubt that the Swiss were much different in that regard, but that's why I asked... regards, Andy

Re: Engadin Centenary on SRF
Andy McMillan <andytrainman@...>
Hello Don,
"SRF have produced a half-hour programme about the centenary of the RhB Engadin line ..." Well spotted, Don! I found it a fascinating little programme - I wonder what the nickname of #391 was after it's swim in the Inn. (The 4-4-0 which fell into the Tay in the Tay bridge disaster was recovered, re-built and sent to work on a different line under a different number - but to staff it was always known thereafter as "The Dipper"...) The idea of a branch line from Ftan station up to Fetan Village was an interesting one - an ideal 'modeller's might-have-been, perhaps? I presume, (which I have to without translating every word of the subtitles), that it would really have been a mere siding, rather than a 'true' branch with a passenger service - but I could be wrong of course. (I saw no plan of any sidings, loops or track at the top end, so I presume the plans hadn't got that far before the Great War intervened.) Or was it to have been a narrower-gauge tram-line, perhaps? Did anyone understand that section rather better than I did? I also noted with interest, "das alt Wärterhaus Pravuost" restored in 1994 towards the end of the programme - which I translated as 'the old keeper's house, Pravuost': but keeper of what? The tunnel? The 'length' of track between Zuoz and Scoul? I couldn't understand that one either. Surely if it had been merely a staff-house for a platelayer (and it looks much too 'posh' for that), there would have been several others along 45Km of line, so are there any more or were platelayers (permanent-way staff) based at stations? (I assume so, as there are large sleeping quarters at Samedan, Zernez and Scoul-T, of course.) Interesting that the house should so resemble the station buildings of the original line - from which plans it was obviously taken - but it would be interesting to see photos of the sides and far end so as to be able to spot the differences - it would hardly need a goods shed, would it - or did they use that space for 'tools of the trade' of a tunnel inspector? Fascinating as these things are, the overly-slick presentation of all these kinds of programmes always seems to leave more questions open than it answers.. Still - that passed a very pleasant hour or so as I viewed and re-wound, re-typed bits of the captions for translation, and tried to make head and tail of it all (understand it all) - so thanks Don: well done! regards, Andy McMillan -- [Please delete old messages when answering!] <http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html> Yahoo! SBB: BLS Celebrations Frutigen 29/06/13
Keith <keith47424@...>
Saturday 29/06/2013
Weather atrocious. Rain all day. However after a 4am alarm call, taxi and 3 trains I made it to Burgdorf to pick up the VHE special from Hutwil - Frutigen with 31 and one coach! On arrival at Frutigen it was a quick look around, (new Bombardier 187002 last mile diesel electric, a French Prima electric, 843502 & 843504, a couple of Kiss units, preserved loks included 307, EBT102, 273 & 312 & a couple of coaches at strange angles including a DVT on its side) get drenched and see what was working the special shuttles to Kandersteg. They were to run every 30 minutes starting at 10.20 with 205 working the first, 251 worked the next and the preserved old unit (sorry not sure of its number) was worked in tandem with BLS 172. There were rumours that the 11.50 special was going to be 205 & 208. 208 was working a Swiss Historic special from Basel to the event due in about 11.30. However where the shuttle tickets were being sold they said it wasn't going to work but would be put on static display. However I hung around just in case. And sure enough it did produce. 208 & 205 together. When was the last time that happened? And a return for 5CHF. Much cheaper than the 250CHF for the special. Not sure if anything else worked as left at 13.30. Good to meet up with the English cranks, Des, Mr Belton, Ian, Patrick and the others. Tomorrow RhB and hoping for better weather. Cheers Keith47424.

Re: Trams diverted away from Basel SBB
George Raymond
What work is being undertaken to the tram tracks to cause such adisruption? A central part of the work is to replace the tram rails that exit Aeschengraben, cross Nauenstrasse and enter the tram station in front of Basel SBB railway station in Centralbahnplatz and vice versa. According to the BVB press release, in the last 10 years an estimated 147 million street vehicles and 1.44 million trams have rolled over these rails in Nauenstrasse. George

Simon My sympathies for your long suffering. Projects in Switzerland in general do seem to take a long time. What work is being undertaken to the tram tracks to cause such a disruption? It is nice to see that at least one RBe4/4 will be kept in it's original livery and now a second will be kept in the last NPZ livery as well.
Hopefully they will keep a whole trainset (A, AB, B, BDt) to go with it Regards Mike C

Re: Trams diverted away from Basel SBB
Kidger Paul
Thanks Martin
I guess that this is going to cause major disruption hence the decision to undertake the work in the holiday month. Sorry I cannot read the German (not having the grandchildren here at the moment), but I presume that there is going to be major track renewals. Eldest granddaughter has a choice of activities over the summer holidays and one such activity is a day at the Basel Tram garage. I have suggested she applies for it and asks to take me along as well, purely to carry her lunchbox. She refuses and instead want to spend a day at the local bakery or doing pottery. Paul Kidger

Re: Trams diverted away from Basel SBB
Simon
Surprised big diversions like these haven't happen more often in the last
few years. Basel is currently attempting to break the world record for the most number of roads being dug up in the city, at the same time. This attempt is running concurrently with another attempt to spend as long as possible not filling in the holes generated by the other record attempt. They have been replacing the water pipes in the road outside my apartment for TWO YEARS; and they haven't finished yet !! I could have done the job, on my own, with a wobbly plastic spoon faster than the army of orange jacket wearing slackers who stroll around all day playing with the diggers/rollers/dumpers etc. <rant over>

Trams diverted away from Basel SBB
From July 1st to 31st Basel tram lines 1 8 10 11 will be diverted and not run via Basel SBB.

Re: Location ID Query
Examining Oberglatt on google maps I would say that is the likely location. The house just in front of the railcar seems to be still there, now almost surrounded by trees. When Oberglatt-Niederglatt was doubled in 1983 the junction was moved north and the curve eased so the track will be totally different when the picture was taken.
1007 was withdrawn by SBB on 31.01.1974 so that helps to date the picture. I would rule out Niederglatt, the curve is not right for there

Re: Location ID Query

It could be Oberglatt (keep in mind that this photograph is at least 40
years old). Another possibility might be Niederglatt. Max.
