One road number can only be carried by one vehicle at the same time. The Roman numerals are a common way to indicate the sequence of vehicles having carried the same number over the time. There is no reason to stencil the Roman numerals to the vehicle.

As always, there is one exception to the rule...
This was BVZ/MGB Xa 2911-II, rebuilt in 1983 from BD 2291 and replacing X 2911 ex 2001 ex 201, 1929 ex LEB C 9 ex BB 4 ex DD1 ex Mont Cenis, built in 1869, scrapped in 1982.

Accepted by SBB 09.10.1964 but had been in use on test trains since 12.10.1963


Since August 2005 had only been used for working empty coaches in the Basel station area. 11101 was last in use in May 2013 and has been in Zürich works since then.


The prototype Re 4/4 II were delivered as 11201 to 11206 and were renumbered to 11101 to 11106 in 1966


That 11201 was in fact 11201 II as the number was originally carried by a Be 3/5 which was later 12201 (withdrawn 1963) and the 11201 which will become LION 420 201 is 11201 III


As is well known 11102 to 11106 all went to BLS as 420 508 509 510 511 512 507 in December 2005 and have since been scrapped.

11101 is officially withdrawn but remains in Zürich works partly canabalised and has not been scrapped

11185 returned to service today. It had been out of service since derailing in Lausanne Triage in Feb. 2012

I was not aware that the new station was replacing Gleis 51-54 (Sihlpost). My assumption that this was in addition to the existing tracks and not a replacement. Thanks for the information.

S2 S8 S14 running after this are not showing a platform on the journey planner which suggests they will use what ever is available in the main station.

BAM stone train working

My uncle (through the good offices of his contacts within AFAC* Section Geneve) reports that the BAM stone workings to Gland have now started.

*for those who are not familiar, AFAC is the French national railfans group (Association Francais des Amis du Chemin de fer), which has local groups across France, but also in the two Swiss cities with closest ties to France (Basel and Geneve)

Re: Swedish Hector Rail 182s in Basel

I had seen reports that HectorRail 182s (Class 242) have been spotted pulling container trains to Basel as well as reports that they had also been used to pull some Euro Express Charter Trains from Basel to Holland. The Hector Rail locos are not authorized for operation in Switzerland, so they can only come as far as Basel SBB or Muttenz using the authorized tracks.

Bahnbilder.de suggests in several photos that HR was operating under contract with the SBB Cargo/ChemOil for the container traffic.
