There are prcoedures, but I haven't studied them all. The most common case is a failure of the on-train equipment. In normally signalled land it is allowed to continue with speed restriction or with a second person in the cab. On ETCS-Level-2-Lines the driver can be allowed to continue at reduced speed, provided radio is still working.

Failures of the lineside equipment will regularly close down operation. Priority is then to bring passenger trains into a station. Some twenty years ago a manual operation with telephone and written orders would have started. Today it would theoretically be possible to do so over radio. But the number of employees doesn't allow such an operation today.

And finally, if the signal boxes are out, will there still be juice in the overhead line? The other way round, if 50-Hz current is off, it is possible to feed signalboxes from the 16.7 Hz overhead line.

Signalling question

I was yesterday discussing railway signalling with some friends of mine who are not railfans but do IT system security.

We were wondering, in the hypothetical situation that on a certain line there was to be a total failure of the signalling system.
Not just the signals themselves but the computers behind it all. Maybe a power failure or a software crash or a hacker attack or terrorism. The cause is not important for the purpose of my question. I know there are also backup computer systems and so on, but suppose for the purpose of this question that those are also out of use.

Is there some way in which trains can be dispatched manually by telephone or something like that? Or maybe driven on line of sight at slow speed?

Has this ever happened?

Or would the line be down until the proper system can be restored?

Interesting aerial shot. Did you notice the bridge just upsteam of the SBB bridges. It looks like it is currently used as a footbridge, but it is on the alignment of the Bellinzona to Castione-Arbedo section of the Bellinzona–Mesocco railway. I wonder if it an original or a replacement.

That would certainly explain it. Besides, there also seems to be a waterfall quite near to the bridges, which would have complicated the possible construction site.

Looking at the Swisstopo aerial view shows that there is a third bridge besides the 1938 bridge (downstream). It looks like a gas (and possibly water and perhaps more) pipe bridge. Building temporary gas etc. pipes might have been more expensive than just shut down railway traffic on a weekend.

I found an interesting piece at <http://www.smartec.ch/content/download/730/5537/file/c17.pdf> that gives some details on how they built and moved the 1995 bridge.

This bridge substituted the original steel bridge built in 1894 and the construction was done much like what they are doing now: build the new bridge upstream, demolish the old one, slide the new bridge over to where the old one stood.

The sliding part took some six hours, quite fast for such a task. This time they'll be doing two slides, I suppose one after another, and it will be the second slide for what will be the bridge for the northbound track.

I hope that somebody will record the whole show and put it on the Tube.

What I can see from the pictures:
The overturned tank wagons seem to have been at the end of a freight from Yverdon to Lausanne. The last wagon was loaded with containers and still carries the end-of-train sign. On picture 7/16 you can see the stopped freight in the distance. To the right of the container wagon there is a VTG tank, to the left another tank, badly damaged, but both don't seem to leak. Further up, on the left, there are two tankers, a four wheeler and a bogie wagon. The article says that one wagon lost 25t of 98% sulphuric acid. I assume that this was the four wheeler. The other three tankers contained:
57 t soda lye
52 t hydrochloric acid
23 t methylene
None of these three wagons lost anything of its content the article says.

Repairing (and probably soil replacement where the sulphuric acid went off) would take several days SBB informed.

It is speculation, as I am not familiar with the situation there.

One possibility coming to my mind would be accessibility of the
construction site, or foundation issues.

I did some reading up on this, and as I understand it, it's a quite convoluted piece of engineering that's going to be done there at Castione-Arbedo.

The Gothhard line to Bellinzona crosses the Moesa over two side-by-side bridges, just south of the station at Castione. The northbound track lies over a bridge built in 1939 and the southbound one on a bridge built in 1995-96 that substituted the original steel bridge from 1896.

The older bridge has reached the end of its life expectancy and has to be replaced. What they are doing is building a new bridge upstream from the 1995 bridge, demolishing the 1939 bridge, moving the 1995 bridge to where the 1939 was and finally moving the new bridge to where the 1995 bridge was.

The old bridge has already been demolished, and the new one is already built. While this was going on, rail traffic was going over the single track of the 1995 bridge with no significant delays or complications.

What they are going to do this coming weekend is move the 1995 bridge, which implies shutting down all rail traffic, which will be resumed on Monday. I assume that after that they will move the new bridge into position and when done, traffic will again be on both tracks.

Due to the rebuilding of the station Square in St Gallen the Trognerbahn will be using a temporary stop at the junction of Bahnhofstrasse and Schützengasse. This shortens the line by about 360m and will be in place between August this year and June 2016. The exact dates have not been released yet

Because there was no unloading facility in Visp for some time. The old structures were gone with Visp NEAT station opening and the new facilities in Bockbart (where the new MGB units were unloaded) were only ready around the end of 2013.

And for the rest, a journey from Stadler's via Landquart - Oberalp isn't that much further than via Bern - Visp.

This generally describes the difference between a Museum and an Art Gallery.


A Museum is a place where objects (usually of historical interest) are on display. An Art Gallery is a place where objects are on display and in many cases can be purchased.

A Museum can contain more than one type of exhibition (sculpture, paintings, artifacts, etc). An Art Gallery is usually limited to paintings, photographs or similar.

Interesting point. It may be that this is one of those areas where normal US English usage diverges from UK usage. I have actually been to the Boston Museum of Fine Art, and speaking as a Englishman I would describe it as an art gallery rather than a museum. To me a museum is a place holding artifacts of historic, rather than artistic, importance.
