I was not aware that there were lightsteel coaches in Portugal. Were these ex-SBB coaches or coaches manufactured specifically for export to that country?

They still have automatic coupler on one and screw coupling on the other end. But they now belong to BLS. Six of the ten should still be around, now used between Bern and B�nigen.

This is correct.

Unfortunately, on that picture, the baggage cart obstructs the view to the
automatic coupler side of the Sputnik.

FWIW, the couplers used with the Swiss Express cars were according to the
UIC specification (most likely draft) of the era. These couplers were, if I
remember correctly, used elsewhere too, for example in coal trains in
Germany (my memory may let me down on this).

A bit off topic but I can recommend the Bellinzona-Chur Postauto which I did in January. (Must reserve in advance easily done online up to 90 min before departure) The remaining SEFT rolling stock was visible from the motorway at ?Grono?

There is a little difference between the two events:

In 2003 the closure of the road was planned and there was enough time to prepare the funicular to take over traffic.

This time, the road was closed suddenly after a rockfall and helicopters had to take over for a few days. Thanks to the 2003 refurbishment the funicular could be reactivated within a few days.

As in many other places in the mountains, it is expensive to have two infrastructures. On the other hand, the second infrastructure is invaluable in those moments, where the first infrastructure is damaged.

There have been a few politicians who claimed the construction of an auxiliary road... Yes, such people exist!

SBB in Cuba

We know of BLS coaches sold to North Korea and deliveries of Swiss-built coaches to Mexico and Saudi-Arabia. But did you know that you can travel in ex-SBB coaches from Habana to Santiago de Cuba?

When the Cisalpin TEE changed from RAe TEE II to Inox coaches plus locomotives, SBB purchased five of these Inox coaches in 1974 and numbered them 61 85 18-89 000 - 004. Ten years later TGVs took over and SBB sold their coaches to SNCF. They were renumbered 61 87 18-89 000 - 004 and were used for another ten years to Brussels. By 1995 the ex-SBB coaches were withdrawn and by 1996 also all other Inox coaches. But in 1999 SNCF sold 44 coaches to Cuba, including the five es-SBB coaches!

An article in Semaphor 52 says that one train is working again since Autumn 2016 and doing two weekly returns on the Habana - Santiago de Cuba line.

The new Vauderens tunnel, allowing double deck coaches, was opened on 19.04.2001 with one and six days later with both tracks. The original cutting was then filled and the landscape rearranged so that the portals disappeared soon after.

Funicular Amsteg to Bristen

Due to a landslip the mountain road to Bristen a community above the Reuss Valley has been inaccessible apart from on foot and by helicopter.
The funicular of the power company in Amsteg has been returned to service to enable the inhabitants easier access until the road is restored.

I cannot answer your question about the status of the tunnel now, but if you go to map below:

then click on the gearwheel next to the red '1900' and adjust the transparency slider that reveals, you can see how the line was diverged and where the old tunnel was. Should tell you whether the trace you thought you saw was real.

Ancien Tunnel de Vauderens - Bern to Lausanne main line

From the Schweers and Wall atlas, I know that there is a bypassed, original tunnel near Vauderens on the Bern - Lausanne main line. It is marked as being 921m in length, and was obviously replaced at a later date by the present 1975m Tunnel de Vauderens on a straighter alignment.


On an IR from Bern to Lausanne last October I looked out for any traces of the disused, original tunnel on either side of the present one, but could see nothing apart from what may have been a trace of an original, approach track bed in fields on the Lausanne side. Does the original Vauderens tunnel still exist, and if yes, what is it being used for now?

What is the problem with a slightly glossier finish?

After all I presume one of the aims is to make the locos last longer without getting dirty which one assumes is what SBB would like the public to see
