Hupac Vectron Locomotives

Martin Baumann

The first two of Hupac's 8 Vectrons have been delivered.

They are 193 490 to 193 497

or 91 80 6193 49x-x D-SIEAG

193 490 is works number 22359

Re: MOB orders dual-gauge Golden Pass cars

Would the RhB want such engines?
How much might it cost to change all the electrical gear to the RhB standard?
How much might it cost to change to the signalling regime of the RhB?
With so many EMU sets on order from Stadler JUST how much work might there be for RhB locomotives?

MOB orders dual-gauge Golden Pass cars

Toma Bacic

So, MOB orders dual-gauge Golden Pass passenger cars!

http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/traction-rolling-stock/single-view/view/mob-orders-dual-gauge-golden-pass-fleet.html

"Montreux-Oberland Bahn has ordered a fleet of 20 gauge-changing coaches to
operate through services between Montreux and Interlaken. To be marketed as
GoldenPass Express, the service is due to be launched by MOB and its
partner BLS from the timetable change in December 2020.
To be built by Stadler, MOB’s gauge-changing fleet will have panoramic
windows, continuing a tradition which has helped attract tourists to the
62·4 km Montreux – Zweisimmen route since 1976. The cars will be mounted on
newly-developed gauge-changing bogies supplied by Alstom in Germany. These
will initially be mounted under existing cars for a period of trials that
will start as soon as gauge-changing facilities have been completed at the
break of gauge in Zweisimmen.
Work has been in progress to rebuild the station at Zweisimmen since 2015,
and gauge-changers should be operational on two tracks ‘by autumn 2018’.
MOB says that extensive testing of the gauge-changing equipment will be
required before it is approved for commercial operation, delaying the
launch of through services beyond the most recently planned start date of
late 2019. In particular, MOB will need to demonstrate the reliability of
the gauge-changing facilities in winter conditions.
Plans envisage that MOB will haul the through trains over the metre gauge
900 V DC line between Montreux and Zweisimmen using two-car Series 9000
sets also supplied by Stadler. BLS will provide motive power for the
1 435 mm gauge part of the route between Zweisimmen and Interlaken Ost,
which is electrified at 15 kV 16·7 Hz."

Now - one of the interesting questions is how many MOB Ge4/4 will be sold
(and when) to the RhB?

No, the ones in the picture are "Post Office Sorting Vans" (according to RCTS Coaching Stock of British Railways 1978) and belong to the "Travelling Post Offices"
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travelling_Post_Office>

Half of the length of these vans is an office for sorting mail while on the way to the destination.
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StGallen20051230S94h_960.jpg>

Letters collected in letter boxes at the railway stations mostly got a postmark of the Travelling Post Office with the train number. example of train 6547:

Would it be a "parcels van", even if it was manned, and they did sorting
the mail while running?

Re: Good stations for freight train photos

In British railway parlance, full brake is IMHO an acceptable way of describing a passenger style coach with no passenger seats, other words to describe the same coach in Britain would be 'parcels van' or just 'van'

I second Andrew's points about Baden.

In fact it was a similar piece of signalling control at Brugg that resulted in me getting the Baden picture shown here:

http://railfoteurop.piwigo.com/picture?/7284/category/218-brugg_and_baden http://railfoteurop.piwigo.com/picture?/7278/category/218-brugg_and_baden

the sequence was as follows (repeated from my report posted here after the trip last October)

Brugg
11649 (620 049) mixed freight ebd: saw it was being looped to be overtaken so I realised I could get ahead via a 460 IR and get a good photo on the sharp curve at Baden.

Baden
620 049 arrived soon after I got into photting position (10.43) , so got  the shot and boarded the first available train back to Brugg!

Brugg
11625 (620 025) mixed freight wbd 10.56
BT 11 (oldie preserved green ‘box’ BoBo elec) arrived with two preserved full brake coaches
620 042 mixed tankers (inc OnRail, Ermewa, GATX)  ebd 11.13
11367 (430 367) mixed freight wbd 11.20
11364 (430 364) [ now very rare Green livery loco ]  mixed freight wbd 11.30

11688 worked (NJ) EN 464 Buchs Zurich this morning. It was due to a request from a loco inspector on his last run before retirement.

Re: Good stations for freight train photos

Andrew Moglestue

Further to my previous suggestions concerning Baden. I forgot to add that an another big plus at Baden is that freight trains frequently stop in the station for signalling reasons. So if you are quick you can photograph the same train from different perspectives / platforms.

I have noticed that between circa 6 and 8 pm you typically see a lot of freight. If you come in the summer you should have daylight then.

By the way, the tunnel that forms the station approach from the Zürich side passes directly under a ruined castle called Stein. If you pick your vantage point well you can - from the station platforms - photograph trains coming out from under the castle.

Re: pass / ticket question

csipromo

From what I could understand, the current offerings now start at Andermatt station. The 4-Pass route takes the Gotthard, Nufenen, Grimsel and Susten and the 3-Pass tour takes the Furka, Grimsel and Susten route.

Yes, you are correct about the 1980s, I had taken the bus from Interlaken in 1985.

Kiesen is another favourite of mine, although the trackwork is very simple! for example here:
http://railfoteurop.piwigo.com/index?/category/210-kiesen_bern_thun_lotschberg_route_9_oct_2015

Renens is not all that busy for freight as a lot of freight comes down the Pied du Jura route towards Lausanne Triage, thus avoiding Renens. That's why I usually head for anywhere on the Pied du Jura / Jurafuss route Cossonay - Neuchatel - Solothurn - Oensingen - Olten. Its a long route so there are plenty of intermediate stations to choose from. Chavornay is nice, with its old platform canopy (if it is still there). Other photos from Pied du Jura:
http://railfoteurop.piwigo.com/index?/category/215-bettlach_solothurn_deitingen_jurafuss_route

Rupperswil is nice (four tracks):

Re: Good stations for freight train photos

Basel - Frick - Bözberg is a real favourite of mine, but only accessible by train to stations between Basel and Frick. Brugg station does not see all the Gotthard freight as it diverges south across the Brugg avoiding line viaduct
Otherwise, for example:
