I think the GEX is an exception for several reasons

Brig - Chur by GEX takes 3:57, by IC8/IC3 only 3:34
this doesn't make it a very interesting connection

Hourly trains have to serve all the villages along the line, not only Andermatt.

Train consists on the rack sections are limited in length. Why should
you open the train for other passengers when you are already fully booked?

On sections, where the train can be longer, the GEX is combined with the
IR or RE.

But if you look at Golden Pass Panoramic, at the BEX and others, you'll=20
find them more and more fully integrated into the normal timetable.

I`d be very interested to see GEX running an hourly service throughout the day. I doubt it would be financially viable and would certainly dilute its attraction for many.

Touristic announcements are made in every IR Chur - St. Moritz and back. So, add the Alvras to the list :-)
This would suggest the distinction between high level special trains and regular trains is becoming increasingly blurred, and more and more tourist traffic is being displaced from named onto unnamed trains.

Will we ever see, for example, the Glacier Express becoming an hourly all-year round service, effectively replacing many/most of the other trains on the route? With the closing of the quality gap this is a possibility.

This would reduce the question to specific rolling stock:
- panoramic coaches for BEX and GEX
- dining cars?
- A 1151-53, 1154, 1161, 1141-44 (ex-CIWL)
- maybe A 1251-52 (ex AB4ü 251-52)

That's the whole RhB except S1, S2 and some trains Chur - Ilanz.

Maybe the criteria that Toma was looking for are more along the lines of

1) trains operating primarily for tourists rather than local traffic
1b) or if local traffic is also covered, separate coaches provided for tourists
2) tourist coaches have enhanced comfort or facilities (this can include panoramic windows, dining facilities, announcement of items of touristic interest)
3) the type of tourists the train is being marketed for are interested in discovering and viewing the landscape, thus for example ski shuttles which may also attract many tourists are discarded from this category
4) such trains are not typically integrated in the "Taktfahrplan" (as far as that existed at the time in question) but operate additionally to it (exceptions may apply)

'Luxury' was probably wrong word, trains with names is much better!
"Fliegender Rhätier" appears for trains with BCe 4/4 501-504 plus BC4ü 251-52 and C4ü 2301-06. Finke/Schweers say the name disappeared in 1946.

"Unterengadin-Express" 1978-84

"Engadin-Express" 1985-.. St. Moritz - Scuol - Landeck - Wien

"Palm-Express" 1986- St. Moritz - Chiavenna - Locarno - Domodossola - Brig - Zermatt, today only St. Moritz - Lugano, without RhB!

"Engadin Star" Landquart - Vereina - St. Moritz

"Aqualino" (Disentis) - Landquart - Scuol

more to come?

Thank you for the answers, Markus!
'Luxury' was probably wrong word, trains with names is much better! There
was also Arosa Express after the re-electrification of the Arosa line.

If you insist on "luxury" we would have to remove the
Bernina-Express
Good sources are Schweers/Wall/Kunnes: Expresszüge auf schmaler Spur. It was published in 1986 but gives informations for the early years. Also with some intersting info comes Wolfgan Finke, Hans Schweers: Die Fahrzeuge der Rhätischen Bahn 1886-1996. It has train consists of 1934/35.

All the trains we are discussing are in a matrix of the following characteristics:

1a) train with a name
1b) train without a name
1c) rolling stock with a name
2a) train with through coaches
2b) full train consist going through
2c) trains (and buses) making connections under a marketing name
3a) train offering all classes
3b) train offering all classes and dining car
3c) train only offering 1st (and old 2nd) class and dining car

Engadin Express was 1a) 2c) 3c). When it started in 1895 RhB had not yet been completed and the final travel was in a stagecoach.

Palm Express is another 2c) type.

If you insist on "luxury" we would have to remove the Bernian-Express before panoramic. Also the Glacier Express was not only luxury. Yes it had a dining car on part of the route an it had first class. But travlling in third class was rather of a type that wouldn't be allowed in Corona times...

What is the aim of your list? Luxury? Through trains? Trains with names?

And then we should mention that the Heidiland-Bernina-Express wasn't a very distinctive product but wanted to say, you also get Bernina if you come from Davos.

there was also a pair of trains besides the Glacier-Express tha t was restricted to Chur - Brig and was called Rhein-Rhone or Rhone-Rhein, depending of the direction. It was, as the Glacier Express was, a group of through coaches. Still today, the Chur - St. Moritz bit of the GEX is of the type through coaches.

To find out all these details it would be necessary to go through the timetables. Unfortunately you can't do that online...

RhB luxury trains

Toma Bacic

Hello!
I am trying to make a list of the RhB luxury trains; and for now I have the
following:
- Glacier Express, introduced in 1930
- Bernina Express, introduced in 1973 (through cars introduced in 1969)
- Heidiland-Bernina Express, introduced in 1995, abandoned in ?
- Heidi Express, introduced in 1999, abandoned in 2005
- Engadin Express, in 1930s (?); also Engadin Express was the brand of the
London-Chur train (?)
Anything else...?

Also, and info where the historic train compositions of those trains can be
found?

Thank you and regards
toma

Re: New livery for BLS 465

I thought we would get some kind of silver and green combination. I think that it would have been nicer with a silver stripe between the lime and the gray sections of the body.

I also noted that none of the photos that I have seen so far have included the taufnahme of the locomotive. Will they continue to bear logos on the side?

I wonder how long it will be before they start to call these loks "limes" and whether 465 013 will be painted yellow "citron" to be different?
