Re: RhB Be 4/4 EMU sets 511 to 516

David Prior

Shown as follows in the current allocations :

511/512/513 all “Abgestellt RhB”
514 BR at Samedan as noted below
515 “Abgestellt LQ”

Presumably 516 doesn’t appear in the list any longer because it is being dismantled already.

When I was over there in mid-Oct two were dumped outside Reichenau-Tamins (I think) and a couple more in the sidings south of Chur. As I don’t really follow units I didn’t note which ones, but presumably they were 511/12/13/15.

I only paid attention to them because during a family winter holiday in Feb of this year, I remembered that the StNPs still had control of most Klo-Dav-Fil shuttles.

It would be nice to see somebody recover 11350 and give it a third life as SOB 41 again.

There is an unconfirmed report that SBB Historic have acquired 11108, I have asked them to confirm if this is true and await a reply.

SBB-P are offering locos of the first series for sale, SFR 450,000 each, the advert states locos will need an overhaul before use.

513 514 515 are currently available for use

516 is currently being stripped at Landquart works

(I suspect that the engine in the best physical condition bodywise will be the machine kept for the heritage collection. It could be 706 is that one and it will receive components from other machines to keep it running).

If it is just the traction motors that are a problem could they re-use the ones off 701?

Is there any need for it to still be available for traffic?

The Re 4/4 II and EWI/II sets used between Brig and Domodossola were removed from these services and moved to Basel where they will be kept in reserve for the time being. The trains are now worked by an NPZ Domino or an EWIV 460 pushpull

Cisalpino traffic with loco-hauled trains started in July 2004 from Zürich (EA 4/2004) and was extended in December 2004 to trains Basel - Bern - Milano and Genève - Milano. In December 2005 the remaining trains (via Luzern and some more from Zürich) became Cisalpino trains.

By December 2004 the Vauban was restricted to Brig and there was no reason to include Italian coaches after that date.

Hi Markus and Mike, thank you for all the great information to answer Alan's question. I have learned a lot and have copied the links for future reference. Along with your comments. Very happy to have read all that you have posted on this topic. This will allow me to also put together good consists of the equipment I have purchased without a clue as to when it was built and run. As some of my layout is Euro themed.

Thanks for the postings.

Take care,

I said the last delivery was in 1985. I meant to say that the last order was 1985. It is quite possible that deliveries continued for another 3 years.
I also said that subsequent deliveries of 2nd class coaches came from the UIC-Z series. I mean subsequent to 1985. The first delivery of the new Bz coaches came around 1987. Those coaches were painted to match the existing Gran Comfort coaches, in the Bandiera livery. Prior to that, 2nd class rolling stock had come from the UIC-X production.

I hope that clears up my statement.

If I remember correctly, the rolling stock in the "Iris" and "Vauban" frequently changed. There were times when SNCB wanted to abandon the connection and SBB took over the operation of the run.
I have photos of the Vauban from 2000 (H.D. Andreas/Bahnprofil) where the train is entirely composed of SBB coaches. In 1998, I have a photo with mixed SNCB I6 in Memling livery, C1 Orange and with at least one SBB EC coach. In 1999, it was mainly composed of SNCB (I6 and I10) coaches. Around 2003, it contained a mix of SNCB and FS coaches. Some of the photos I have seen, the train had one of the SNCB ex-SNCF Grill Express Restaurant coaches.

Some years, the northbound run included additional coaches, including FS coaches to Basel, including one of the FS Restaurants in Bandiera livery (with graffiti). I think that a SNCB Restaurant was attached in Basel for the run to Brussels. I think that some schedules may also have included some couchette coaches and possibly sleepers too. I do not know if the night coaches went to Basel or continued to a point beyond. They might have connected to Amsterdam, Hamburg or possibly to the Komet (Copenhagen).

Mike C

By Winter 2004, most of the coaches were in the XMPR IC/InterCityPlus
colors and then in 2005 by the new Cisalpino livery.
Interestingly the "Vauban" Brussels - Milano kept Bandiera coaches right to the end. I have photos from 2004 in Thun and Bern. Only one C1 livery and that was an SNCB coach.
