When was 92-33 939 withdrawn? It is not mentioned in the list above. It was still in stock 01.01.2003 but was not 01.01.2009. It is missing from the VRS pdf files.

Correction: 705 has been stored serviceable and may return to service if a shortage of locos develops later in the year

SSIF often bought old trainsets from FART and FLP.

I don't think the objective was ever to shorten the distance, but to make the route usable by freight trains with greater clearances.

As a side effect the old tunnel will serve as a service and emergency access and evacuation tunnel, so increasing safety.

Thanks, Markus - very helpful (if not what I'd like to have heard....!)

Look at the current stock list and you will know...
http://www.railfaneurope.net/list/switzerland/switzerland_fart.html

The "toblerones" are owned by the Italians and it is not yet known if SSIF will also buy new trainset. They are only 14 years old...

Spending an undoubtedly huge sum of money to build a tunnel that only shortens the route by less than twenty metres seems a tad profligate to me.
The main rationale was to open the tunnel and thus the route to trains carrying truck trailers that are the standard 4 metres high at the corners.

Perhaps, before ranting about tunnel meters, maybe you should have asked, WHY the new tunnel was built at all. Now, I tell you, the reason was only to widen the profile. It would have been built, even it would have /added/ 18 m to the distance between Hamburg and Reggio di Calabria.

Before a decision was taken, a study was made, if it would be better to enlarge the existing bore or to build a new one. Investment would have been similar but the restriction during the building time weighed out any difference. This was, BTW, similar with the Albula tunnel.

Does anybody have a sense as to which fleet these will be replacing?
In a first line it's very clear
The four three-car units replace ABe 4/6 52-54 in regional trains in the
Swiss part
The four four-car units replace ABe 4/8 45-48 in international trains.

But this doesn't answer the question if SSIF will buy these 7 trains as
a complement to their technically identical ABe 4/6 61-64, to finally
replace their ABe 8/8 21-24 (21-22 ex-FART) and ABe 6/6 33-35 (ex-FLP)

If they were to oust those rather nasty SSIF "Panorama" units (ones
with the Toblerone-style profile!), then I for one would not
weep....
These are the most recent vehicles of SSIF. thus you can't expect them to be replaced soon. Unfortunately.

I wonder whether SSIF will also participate in this program or whether it will only affect the Swiss operations on the line.

I first assumed that these two locomotives (at least) had different liveries. Based on what I have learned in the last 24 hours, it seems that the two locomotives have the same livery, with each one having the SBBCI and RAlpin liveries on alternating sides.

The new tunnel, which opened on November 2, reduces the line distance by 19.85 metres (65.12 feet)

One thing that makes sense to me is that the 186 can run into Italy, whereas the 485s required a locomotive change in Domodossola.

These locomotives were originally leased by Crossrail or Linea. They ended up being the backbone of the Crossrail fleet running between Belgium/Holland and Italy before Crossrail went into restructuring, at which point the lease was taken over by SBB Cargo. The locomotives ended up being subleased to TX Logistics (FS) and saw use on the Gotthard and Simplon. At the same time, operation of Crossrail in Germany and Benelux was taken over by Rhenus Group.
In 2018, the locomotives were transferred to a new division of Rhenus in Switzerland called Cargologic, but that did not change the operation of the locomotives.
Starting late last year, these locomotives were designated to haul the Ralpin ROLA trains which had previously been operated by BLS Cargo using their Re 485 locomotives.
The locomotives previously had the registration D-XRAIL (Crossrail) but now have the registration D-BLSC.

186 906 New livery (RAlpin): https://www.bahnbilder.de/bild/Schweiz~Unternehmen~BLS/1236741/186-906-katzenberg-im-neuen-design.html
186 908 New livery (SBBCI): https://www.railcolor.net/images/basic/bomb_34363_92.jpg

So, these are BLS locomotives being leased by SBBCI to operate trains run by a joint venture between SBB Cargo, BLS Cargo and Hupac
I am confused. Does anybody have more specific information on how this works?

Thanks and regards
