The 103 is a very handsome beast. I'd jump at the chance to have one of them on my layout. Did it have diamond frame or einholm pantographs when it was loaned?

This was the consequence of a long development between 1935 and 1953. The first coaches appeared with old-type doors in one piece but they had either to be put far back in a recess or then they violated the loading gauge when open. With no automatic door closing available it was a necessity that a train could pull off with open doors. The first coach, which had a large recess, and all luggage vans kept this type of doors.

The first approach for a better solution was sliding doors but they were abandoned as not reliable. Next development was the folding door with wings. Exactly said the doors had two wings that were connected but the wings folded, when the wings were opened. A door had four parts. This was later reduced to three parts, having one wing that didn't fold.

It required some testing with the opening mechanism, because the task of opening doors was left to the passenger. One test was with long levers inside that actuated the doors indirectly. Finally the handle directly at the door was the solution retained.

Not all coaches have the same number of small windows in the doors. Doors made from four parts had two windows in the middle. Doors with three parts had three windows but some exceptions only had two. To make it interesting it wasn't always the same part that came without window.

Coaches with single doors (instead of the double doors) allowed a new construction with only two wings but no folding. This design was developed into what became the Einheitswagen doors.

Last development was the center entrance coaches with double doors.They had folding doors but no wings. The number of parts was also reduced to only two.

Railcolor.net also has 193 492 (the original "Nightpiercer") also back in operation for SBB Cargo International.
491 and 493 still show as WRS Germany.

Sorry, the BLS did testing with a BR 120. SBB did testing with a BR 103 during or shortly after construction of the Heitersberg tunnel on the Zurich-Olten line.

I confused two different occaisions:

between 06 and 23.09.1977 103 233 and 3 DB measuring coaches were on loan to SBB running between Zürich and Olten.

The highspeed testing of EWIV was done in Germany:

103 003 reached 256 km/h with 4 EWIV and a DB measuring coach between Gütersloh and Neubeckum in January 1987

Yes, I had 128 001 from Thun to Spiez 04.08.1998. It was working EC 101 (Wiesbaden-Brig) between Basel and Brig

All these testings can't be compared to the lease of E40 and 194, which were put into daily operation and pulled regular trains. The E40 helped until enough RBe 4/4 and Re 4/4 II were delivered. The 194 helped out some 20 years later and were used in heavy freight traffic, especially Weiacher Kies trains and the like.

Pantographs for E40 had been taken from Ae 3/6 10674, Ae 4/7 10910, 10918, 11005. E40 ran without Signum and needed thus two drivers.

Locomotives returned to Offenbrung every 14 days for maintenance. During this time they were replaced with other locomotives.

Over time, there have been a few occasions where SBB leased or rented DB tractive power, including the E40, E94 and a few other locomotive types.

DB locos on loan to the SBB

I have seen a photograph today that shows a Deutsche Bundesbahn Class E40 electric hauling a goods train near Leuk in 1961. The caption stated that a number of these locos were leased to the SBB at that time and were fitted with one German and one Swiss pantograph. Does anyone know more about this?

This is probably its 3rd year in operation. They took it down for the first winter, but left it up this and began work again clearing the snow last week. I've many a view of it as it's been a fascinating destination for Dienstzug.

I was now able to find the tender announcement. The weight is 16 tonnes/axle, so 64 tonnes total, the same as MOB's Ge 4/4 and 1.5 tonnes heavier than MBC's Ge 4/4.
