I hate the trend but it is set to get worse, RhB are going for Motor Units, SOB are going for Flirts, even the BLS who bucked the trend with their loco- hauled sets are ordering more units for the Lotschberg. From what I gather, no major overhauls are to be carried out on any series 1 Re4/4" (11108-11155) with the SBB-P fleet (currently 94 after 11141) being reduced to 60 by this process over the next 3 years. I expect quite a few to get "parked up" when the new timetable commences. There certainly is a trend, but it's not absolute. In Switzerland, the Re460/465 locomotives are likely to remain in passenger service for a long time still, even if any significant new locomotive orders are unlikely. In Germany, recent deliveries of new intercity passenger locomotives, and also locomotives and stock for suburban trains, would also contradict the notion that loco-hauled passenger trains are a dying breed. In Austria, the same can be said of the Taurus. In Spain, new high-speed diesel locomotives are currently being delivered for the secondary express lines. I think the type is a derivative of the British class 67, but with a more appealing design (okay, if you ignore the livery). There are countries that are heading for an all multiple-unit future, such as the UK or the Netherlands, but at the moment these are still more the exception than the rule. Andrew

BTW Around 5pm in the evening used to be the best time at Genève in the old days, when you could see French, Swiss, Spanish and German rolling stock alongside each other in the station, for a period of quite a few years the Talgo from Barcelona met the Rheingold from Hook of Holland, so two 'ends' of Europe met each other in the middle!

Gordon, you have hit the proverbial nail... there are no countries I know that are not going the way of multiple units. I hate the trend but it is set to get worse,In the USA there are only two electric heavy rail systems, the AMTRAK, New Jersey Transit, SEPTA and Connecticut Department of Transportation in the northeast and the METRA in Chicago., originally the Illinois Central. AMTRAK for its new high speed Acela trains went with loco hauled equipment and NJT has given up MU for new equipment. NJT operates on 11 KV 25 Hz and 25 KV, 60 Hz and many trains have to switch on th fly. The existing MU cars can run on either voltage but require a non-moving conversion from one to the other. The locomotives can changeover on the fly. The cost of the non-powered cars is a lot less and the locos have enough HP to maintain schedules. SEPTA also has some electric locos but I do not know if they are dual voltage. Th METRA system is very small compared to the AMTRAK et al system. bob gillis

I believe that Amsterdam have tried or maybe even still use such a system for deliveries in the city centre. I wonder how the stopping time needed for deliveries fits in with the running of the conventional tram service. I know that Basel have various 'utility' trams such as a Bar car which is parked at the edge of events when the city centre is closed. When in Zurich in July, I photographed VBZ Cargo 1922 hauling a goodsAbsolutely. The trailer actually carries a container which belongs to the waste management agency of the City of Zürich. Such containers are used to transport garbage which goes beyond the normal "household garbage" (such as metal pieces, ceramic and glass stuff, etc.). The train you photographed goes to terminal stations with an extra loop track, and people can carry their stuff to these stops and dispose them. The schedule is published here: http://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/internet/erz/ home.ParagraphContainerList.ParagraphAdditionalInfo.ParagraphList. 0015.File.pdf/Cargo-und_E-Tram_Kalender_def_Juni.pdf that is one looooong link. Rail Calendar 2008
Markus <guerbetaler@...>
Fionnbar asked me, if I would allow him to post the following message.
Rather than allowing him to do so, I will post it myself. I judge this as non-commercial. But I ask all members, who intend to sell self-produced Swiss-railway-related items, to send the message to the moderators and not dircetly to the group. Thanks! Fionnbar wrote: I have produced a calendar of railway subjects for 2008. The subjects are current European rail and the majority of them are Swiss. I have just produced a few hundred and in the hope of recovering my printing costs I am offering them for sale - there is a link to them on the home page of my website. There are better photographers on this list and as such I make no claims to photographic or other excellence but hopefully it might appeal to some of you! http://www.fionnbarr.com/Pages/Calendar2008.htm Well, I like these pictures! And, BTW, 3 of the 4 non-Swiss pictures show trains that also come to Switzerland. Markus, Gᅵrbetal
