Re: Gotthard Base Tunnel open
The original base tunnel is at a much higher elevation and, by comparison with the new tunnel, is the `top` tunnel. The new tunnel is a a much lower elevation and avoids the huge climb.

Pardon my ignorance, but why is it called a base tunnel? So far my searches have not turned up a clue.
Thanks,

Mesocco railway
Does anyone know what has happened to the SEFT in the Mesocco valley?
There is no definitive clue available on the web.

Apologies for all the previous replies but the heritage stock is not fitted with the signalling equipment for the new line. The 460 and 420 classes are, so they can use the line!

Is that a change since last week? I saw several Re 460s last week on inter-regio services over the Gotthard when I was out last week.
