Betreff: [SwissRail] Lucerne and Zurich
I am looking for track plans of the Lucerne and Zurich HauptBahnHofs.
Can anyone on the list point me in the right direction? TIA, - Gary
It is a very long time since Gary asked for track plans. Zurich track plans
have since been detected. If anybody else is interested, post here.

But now a track plan of Lucerne came to my hands. It is an original SBB plan,
so only for personal use (no commercial distribution!). Narrow gauge track is
coloured. Members interested should conatct me off-list.

now the SBB has started running car trains through the Gotthard, I have a
couple of questions:
- Are the car transports heavily used? Since there's only a train once an
hour, it hasn't the capacity of the road tunnel. Are there long waiting
times for the tunnel? Or do most people choose to take an alternative
route, for example the Gotthard pass?
Many take the route over Gotthard pass. It seems that demand was not too
important.

- <OT> Are there plans to keep the Gotthard pass route open longer?
According to http://www.about.ch/geography/index.html , the pass is usually
open 'till November. </OT>
It was said that they will try to keep the pass route open as long as
possible. Main problem is not clearing of snow but danger of avalanches. This
means that opening untill end of year might be possible. Avalanches mostly
start around end of January and last till March or April.

Work is in progress, in July the last standard gauge train reached Menziken
(National Circus Knie). So, don't wait too long with your filiming project.

i've been through and over Gotthard many times and i seem to recall
that there in fact ARE two tunnels

no
The second tunnel is only a rescue tunnel with smaller diameter. Today it
was said on radio that a VW-bus could pass but no bigger vehicle.
Here you can see an inside sight of the second bore:

In the light of the tragic accident in the road tunnel under the Gotthard.
Does the SBB have plans to bring into use the motor rail service
between Gschenen and Airolo?
If you call "motor rail service" what I called "car transport" in my posting,
the answer is YES. But trains and engineers are from BLS. SBB doesn't have any
rolling stock any more for such services.

But road pressure groups would like to extend this rescue tunnel to a true
second bore with two lanes. NO, said the transport minister.

Dear David :
We walked this path three weeks ago.
It had obviously rained and the path was very slippery.
Therefore I suggest that if you walk this in winter, you
make sure that you wear shoes which prevent slipping.
Cheers,

Yes, I remember signs saying that.... but when the road is used as
Schlittelweg, is it also still in use for cars going to Preda? Are people
living in Preda all year long? (I guess it's a bit offtopic for this
list..)

No, not off-topic, as strongly related to a railway offer...

AFAIK early in the morning and in the evening the road is open for local road
trafic (it is too long since I read the sign at the road to be sure). But
there are only few persons living in Preda. And I think most of them are in
some way involved in the railway and sledge business.

Fire in Gotthard road tunnel

Giger-Baumann <giger.baumann@...>

After accidents with fires in Mont-Blanc (FR) and Tauern (AT) the turn was now
on the Gotthard road tunnel. Two trucks collided with a subsequent fire. Until
now 10 persons are reported dead. Fire is not yet extinct. Many drivers
reacted correctly, turned areound ant got out from where they came. Others
walked to the security exits, to be found every 50 m, and so reached the
parallel rescue tunnel. It seems that drivers still could be informed about
correct behaviour via car radio. Because part of the structure is heavily
damaged, the tunnel will be closed for several days if not weeks. Official
rerouting through San Bernardino tunnel (where parallel rescue tunnel is only
now being built) already led to heavy congestions. Rerouting over old pass
road is only possible for cars and single trucks, no trailers are allowed.

Some pressure groups already try to make use of this sad event to push a
second road tunnel. Transport minister Leuenberger clearly rejected such
proposals.

Railways also reacted in a quick move:
- Long distance passenger trains get more cars
- car transport through Ltschberg run more often
- Starting tomorrow, Thursday BLS car transport trains will also run through
the
Gotthard tunnel (hourly, capacity 70 cars at CHF 25 each)
- Additional piggy back capacities should be available (and the available free
capacities of existing offers better marketed)

Is WSB taking over from SBB ?

jeanphilippe.noiville@...

Hello to all,
I sent this msg yesterday but I probably erred, since it doesn't
appear. I'm now repeating it.

I'm referring to an earlier (May 2000) message which stated :
"Swiss Government has decided that SBB can close its Seetalbahn
branchline Beinwil - Beromünster. Passenger trafic on this line was
transfered to bus in 1992, freight transports to Reinach and Menziken
continued. Closing the line will allow the narrow gauge railway WSB
Wynen- und Suhrentalbahn to relocate its rails from the road to the
former SBB right-of-way".

My question is, what is the current status of that project ? Is it
already completed, under completion, or still just being discussed ?
I'd like to film the present WSB road stretch and I'm trying to find
out how much time I have for that.
Thanks for your help
Best regards to all
