Re: Ceneri Base Tunnel

We had the same conversation only month ago under the title: Gotthard base tunnel open, tunnel capacity.

It was suggested that freight going via Luino might only need one loco, but multiple locos including Re10/10 remain in use on the Lötschberg axis long after the LBT has been opened. On both the Gotthard and Lötschberg axes I would maintain that there are enough 'average' gradients away from the main mountain sections to warrant the continued use of Re10/10 for a while yet. It is not only gradients to think about, but also capacity for acceleration away from holding loops, the back up of having a second loco in case of loco problems, etc.

What may well disappear along with banking locos would be the 'Re20/20' lash ups

Chiasso collision

There has been a collision between two freight trains near Chiasso, allegedly caused by the driver of 185 098+185 100 passing a signal at danger and hitting the side of a train hauled by a BLS loco

Of course I mean the Regional Gotthard route.

Check out the Railway Gazette.com today as there is a post about SOB wanting to take over the Gotthard route from 2017 and also an article on the first cars for SBB's EC250 trainsets being near to completion.

Trains for the Luino line have no significant grades requiring extra
locomotives.

One object of the Gotthard base tunnel was to allow freight trains to be
pulled by one locomotive instead of Re 10/10's (Re485, etc) and also be
longer. If there is still one mountainous area around the Ceneri section,
won't the freight trains be required to operate as before until 2020? Is
the Ceneri tunnel digging already in progress?

The Ceneri Base Tunnel wouldn't open 2020, if work wasn't in progress!

RhB workings10th and 11th July

adrianknight47@sky.com

Some notings on the RhB from the weekend.

415 worked the heritage train from Landquart to Samedan Sunday (10th) in beautiful weather.

707 worked the "700" turn later in the day vice 704 which was shown on the lok digest.

706 worked the Ilanz service on Monday (11th) as per diagram.

605 worked the 10.26 Glacier Express from Chur.

RhB regular Croc hauled train and Salon cars in service trains

For anyone not up to speed with the Croc operation, the train runs every Sunday until 4 September, booked Ge6/6I Croc (ie 414 or 415 as they are the only two left serviceable). Supplement (second class only) is CHF12.50

The train runs Landquart - Chur - Samedan and return with extended stops at Tiefencastel (half hour southbound) and Bergün (1 hour northbound)

https://www.rhb.ch/en/world-of-railway-experiences/railway-experiences/albula-experience-train#overview https://www.rhb.ch/en/world-of-railway-experiences/railway-experiences/albula-experience-train%23overview

Another new venture this summer is:

From 1 June – 4 December 2016, historic salon (pullman) coaches will be included in one return regional train per day on Chur – St. Moritz, Chur - Disentis and Chur – Arosa. Supplement payable on the train is CHF 5 first class and CHF 10 second class.

The end date of December suggests the use of them on the Albula main line is a last 'hurrah' before the Alvra sets come in in force.

RhB are saying that the inclusion of the coaches in the trains is not guaranteed, nor is the actual train it will be in (although the “likely” trains are shown on the web site),

In the US there would be 100 lawyers chasing every passenger on the train trying to get them to sue for whiplash. Or do they that in Switzerland too?

To clarify, I deliberately wrote "the double deck loco hauled Genève – St Gallen ICs (as they are now a threatened species)" so that it would be clear I was talking about the East - West trunk route ICs (which as Markus subsequently noted are the 'top link' trains composed of 10 IC2000)

As Markus points out, the non aircon coaches will the be first to go, which is exactly why I have been chasing them ad nauseam (!) for the last few years.

On this trip, I was rather pleased that in just three short days in Switzerland I was able to photograph in active service EWI, RIC repainted and RIC unrepainted - all three variants of the most threatened stock.

I have added the relevant phots to the Photos section:

At Othmarsingen, the Westbound IR train hauled by 11150 included unrepainted RIC, the train hauled by 11116 included only repainted RIC, and the Sion Geneve peak only commuters also only had repainted RIC

Lastly, note that when I write RIC in my reports to this group I always mean the B 21-73 ex Bpm ex Bm Z2 type and not other as these are the type SBB traditionally consistently coded 'RIC'

Yes. However, not all were repainted, but all were renumbered after the
doors were fitted with automatic opening and side selective blocking.

The B 21-73. Are those the RIC 1972 coaches that were recently being repainted in the new livery? I can understand the EWI being retired.

Once these are gone, it will be the end of the era when you could have the window open and enjoy the sounds and smells of the ride, not to mention taking pictures through the open window.

AFAIK the Re 460 IC2000 Pendelzug trains are still part of SBB plans.
With the upcoming arrival of the Twindexx and Giruno trainsets, it is
first and foremost the Re 420s and IR trains that will be phased out
of service.
Sure the IC2000 will remain in use but it is likely that you will no longer find so long trains (10 coaches) as you can find now in the Genve - St. Gallen diagram.

The next generation to go is everything without air condition:
- EW I/II klB
- B 21-73 ex Bpm ex Bm Z2

As reported the 26 B 20-73 ex Bpm Z1 had hastily been taken out of service and a larger batch of them sold to the Czech republic. However, these /had/ air condition.
