Re: Platform sectors.

I get the feeling Sector A is almost always at the Zurich end of the station, regardless of actual geography, ie even at somewhere like Visp, Sector A is at the West end, away from Zurich geographically, but not by train where west leads towards the direction trains take to eventually reach the Zurich area - ie not the Brig/Simplon end.

I checked a selection of stations from Geneve to St Gallen plus some north and south on the Trafimage plans on SBB.ch and they all follow this rule, except for some reason Liestal, where A is at the Basel end not the expected Olten end

TGV Gare De l'Est to Zurich/Basel

Simon Close

I read somewhere that at least some of the Paris - Basel/Zurich trains were reverting back Gare de l'Est this year from Gare de Lyon. Does anyone know if that has happened yet and if so, which departures use Gare de l'Est?

Gare de l'Est is much preferable over Gare de Lyon for me, as it is a 5 min walk from Eurostar at Gare Du Nord avoiding the overcrowded and hot Metro.

and which end D?

Or E!

Platform sectors.

In Swiss stations platforms are often devided in sectors. Is there a
general rule which end will be sector A, and which end D?

Re: Luino line closed for refurbishment in 2017

Given that this is the only currently available 'low level' route between the Gotthard base tunnel and Italy, it seems a bit strange that they picked this time to close it. Surely either earlier, before the Gotthard base tunnel was open, or later, after the Ceneri base tunnel is open, would have been better times.

Is the intent still to convert the section to dual trackage?

Luino line closed for refurbishment in 2017

The Cadenazzo - Luino line will be closed for rebuild between 11 June - 9 December 2017.
During this period the intermodal freight that uses it is expected to be split between the Monte Ceneri 'summit' route and the Lötschberg route

I've added a few photos to the photos section, of the Ceneri base tunnel northern approach, taken nearly a year ago showing already well advanced work

We had the same conversation only month ago under the title: Gotthard base tunnel open, tunnel capacity.

It was suggested that freight going via Luino might only need one loco, but multiple locos including Re10/10 remain in use on the Lötschberg axis long after the LBT has been opened. On both the Gotthard and Lötschberg axes I would maintain that there are enough 'average' gradients away from the main mountain sections to warrant the continued use of Re10/10 for a while yet. It is not only gradients to think about, but also capacity for acceleration away from holding loops, the back up of having a second loco in case of loco problems, etc.

What may well disappear along with banking locos would be the 'Re20/20' lash ups

Chiasso collision

Martin Baumann

There has been a collision between two freight trains near Chiasso, allegedly caused by the driver of 185 098+185 100 passing a signal at danger and hitting the side of a train hauled by a BLS loco

Of course I mean the Regional Gotthard route.

Cheers Keith47424.

Check out the Railway Gazette.com today as there is a post about SOB wanting to take over the Gotthard route from 2017 and also an article on the first cars for SBB's EC250 trainsets being near to completion.

Cheers Keith47424

Trains for the Luino line have no significant grades requiring extra
locomotives.

One object of the Gotthard base tunnel was to allow freight trains to be
pulled by one locomotive instead of Re 10/10's (Re485, etc) and also be
longer. If there is still one mountainous area around the Ceneri section,
won't the freight trains be required to operate as before until 2020? Is
the Ceneri tunnel digging already in progress?

The Ceneri Base Tunnel wouldn't open 2020, if work wasn't in progress!
