GTW 2/6 family

Giger-Baumann <giger.baumann@...>

The Stadler GTW 2/6 family will get a new, very special member. BVZ Zermatt Bahn has ordered two cogwheel - GTW 4/8 for their Täsch - Zermatt shuttle. Täsch is the end of the road open to public. Only inhabitants of Zermatt may continue on the narrow road up to the parking at the entrance of the village. Guests take the train. To make it easy for them, it is possible to take the bagagge with them on a trolley.

The new GTW 4/8 will be similar in concept to existing bagagge-trolley-cars of BVZ and to GTW 2/6. Main difference is this: Instead of the two-axle motor car in the middle of a GTW 2/6, the GTW 4/8 or BDSeh 4/8 (as BVZ calls them) will have a four-axle cogwheel motor coach in the middle. The actual order contains two trains, two more could be ordered later. Financing is done with a leasing-agreement.

funicular instead of Glacier Express

Giger-Baumann <giger.baumann@...>

On October 1st, rock was falling on road and rail between Bitsch stop and Mörel station. No train will be going untill about October 13 because there is danger of more rock coming down.

As road is interrupted as well, the only possibility is to take a little road that passes by the dangerous place on the upside. But this road does not go down anymore. It ends in Ried-Mörel. Lukily there is a funicular going down to Mörel station. So this is your journey from Andermatt:
by FO-train to Mörel, up to Ried-Mörel by funicular and down again by bus. It is said, that arriving in Brig could be late up to one hour!

But there IS public transport.

Re: Re. Coach pictures

Paul,
I suppose you have browsed the European Railway server. In general, there are lots of pictures to be found on the internet (and CD-ROM), but quality is not always too good (depending also on screen-type or printer). Example:
About ÖBB, DB, FS, SBB and DSB I know books and brochures with pictures of all types existing at the time. Prices are between CHF 20 and 60 (about USD 12 to 38) but high costs could result from shipping. About Czech and Hungarian railways I did not find anything up to day and would be interested, if you get informations from anywhere.

I will put links to passenger-car pictures on SwissRail and ask everybody else to do so.

Hello Markus,

RhB coach photos are not a problem, they are fairly easy to find.  I'm interested in OeBB, DB, FS, SBB, Czech, Hungarian, DSB, TEN, Wagon-Lits, Eurofima and other standard coaches, country-specific coaches, speisewagens, schlafwagens, couchette wagens etc.  1970s, 1980s, early 1990s.

Thanks!

Subject: Re. Coach pictures

Paul,
you asked:
I'm looking for websites that feature photos of European railway coaches and freightcars, not just loks (which are easy to find).   I know of a few sites for freightcars but not for coaches.   I have some coach "superdetailing" to do.

"European" is not a very exact description.  Perhaps you could tell me a little bit more of what you are looking for?

SBB-FS Joint venture

Giger-Baumann <giger.baumann@...>

SBB announced that the start of their joint venture with FS would be postponed (once again). They said, there was more work to do than could be foreseen. Critics say, that planning was not realistic. It seems that the will of the Italian partners is not as great as their words are. A problem seem to be the unions. And Brussels has not yet decided, whether it would agree this joint venture. Another question is, whether the Italians dislike the SBB way of wanting to cooperate with anybody. In the TEE alliance there is a cooperation with main competitor DB, however, only passenger traffic is concerned here. But the planned 34%-ownership of BLS makes SBB partner of a railway with a cooperation signed with DB in freight business.

Perhaps, somebody read about it in Italy? Can you report?

Glacier-Express going through again

Giger-Baumann <giger.baumann@...>

Today, Thursday, October 12, 1500 the FO-line between Bitsch and Mörel was reopened, Glacier-Express service will resume Friday. It had been closed since October 1st after some rocks had blocked road and rail. To be sure, about ten times as much was afterwards taken down with Dynamite.

Heavy innondations in upper Rhone-valley

Giger-Baumann <giger.baumann@...>

Due to heavy rain, communications to and within the canton of Valais nearly broke down. From the railways, today October, 15, 11 hrs., the following rail lines are closed:
- Sierre - Brig - Domodossola (SBB)
- Kandersteg - Brig (BLS)
- Brig - Fiesch (FO)
- Brig - Zermatt (BVZ)
- Bex - Gryon (TPC)
Because of dangers everywhere, police recommends not to drive car within the canton!

Nun ist auch St-Maurice - St-Gingolphe unterbrochen.
Now, also St-Maurice - St-Gingolphe is closed.
15.10.00 / 22.00 h

Es wird mit einem mehrtägigen Unterbruch gerechnet. Die BLS versucht morgen, einen Regionalzug auf die Südrampe zu schicken.
It is thought that traffic will not resume the next days. However, BLS will try to send a train down from Goppenstein tomorrow morning - if possible.

Today, Oct, 16, 11 a.m. the first northbound InterCity left Brig,
arriving in Bern only 7 min late.
The St-Maurice - St-Gingolphe service resumed as well.
But the Simplon line will still be closed for several days.

Further lines reopened

Giger-Baumann <giger.baumann@...>

In the afternoon, trains got through again to Martigny from Lausanne. Obviousely also Martigny - Orsières is back in service. For Martigny - Brig SBB estimates to need some days for repairs, going to Italy will not be possible before a week.
A very interesting thing happened at the Lago Maggiore: Between Cadenazzo and Luino (Italy) trains replace buses! It seems, that the road got wet in some places, the rail line being in secure hight above water level.
No news from BVZ, but pictures in newspapers do net let hope, that Visp - Stalden of BVZ will open soon. Perhaps there will be trains service in the upper part, and bus replacement to Visp/Brig as soon as the road will be open again.
FO is working through Furka-Tunnel to Oberwald where buses go down to Betten. From there it is only possible to go up by funicular to Bettmeralp, walk (!) to Riederalp and go down to Ried-Mörel, from where a few connections on the road down to Brig exist...; road and rail Brig - Betten will be closed for some days.

Traffic situation

Giger-Baumann <giger.baumann@...>

Tomorrow, Wednesday, through traffic to Italy via Simplon will resume, damage was not that heavy as expected.
SBB Sierre - Brig will remain closed for another two weeks, bus replacement is working.
FO Brig - Oberwald will partially remain closed for another three weeks, bus replacement will be working, starting Wednesday morning.
BVZ has 15 km of 44 damaged and is not sure whether having through trains before the end of this year. bus replacement service is working up to St. Niklaus and it is expected to have a through service starting Thursday. Probably Täsch - Zermatt is done by train, the rest by bus.
