Major new order from SBB for Stadler

Martin Baumann

SBB have ordered another 60 511 6 car units from Stadler. These will be the Interegio version. The first units are expected to enter service in the December 2023 timetable.

(The order is the exercising of existing options so no tender process was required)

Will they be delivered with the same appearance as the original models or will the new deliveries have the same type of cab as the BLS version?

That is not confirmed but newer FLIRT units have a revised front due to new crash protection norms and this may be the case for these new units.

What will change is the seating layout. The press release says the new units will have a total of 466 seats. The current 511.0 have 120 First Class and 415 Standard seats.

In the current units not on the Zürich S-Bahn (*) this will be altered to provide more room in First and the revised totals will be 104 First and 391 Standard

*: 015 to 030 036 037 038; 014 is not currently Zürich S-Bahn but will transfer there.

The differences may mean a new class designation, perhaps 512

The information posted mentions that 41 of the newly ordered trainsets will replace existing material and the other 19 will be used to offer additional services. What equipment will those 41 be replacing (Re 450 Pendel, RABe 514, original RABe 511 or other)?

The remaining 19 are to be used for additional services in the Zurich and Vaud regions.

How many RABe 511 are in use in regions other than those mentioned?

Some EWIV are life expired and will be retired.

There are also still 88 of the old RIC coaches (21-73 series now) on the books though I don't know how many are still in daily use.

It is very likely this will see the end of Re 4/4 II passenger trains apart from the LION Sets (Helena start planning the farewell tour :-) )

Around 20 511 are used in Vaud but these are mostly 4 car 511.1

The original 511, 514 and 450 are either too new to be replaced or have just had major overhauls.

http://reisezuege.ch/index.php?action=9&tfah_id=331 will tell you what is currently supposed to be 511 outside the Zürich S-Bahn apart from the Zürich-Aarau RE which are at http://reisezuege.ch/index.php?action=9&tfah_id=413

The Chur trains mentioned are gradually changing to 502

I really enjoyed the Sargans to Zurich run in the upper deck on a RABe 511 in 2019.
The last time I had done that a segment of that run was in a RBe 540 in 2004.
