Next batch of SBB Flirt starts delivery

523 501 has been handed over for type approval and test. Initially seven were ordered fro Bern to La Chaux de Fonds. This service has since gone to BLS and they will now first be used on Basel-Zürich Flughafen trains. From December 2025 Biel to Basel will increase to 2 trains an hour and the 523.5 will work this line alternating with ICN units.

11 523.5 are now on order with options for 3 more.

This is the only possibility SBB has to fulfil disabled regulation, as they didn't purchase low floor coaches that can work together with EW IV or EC coaches. And double deckers don't get through the Laufental without being mechanically modified...

BTW, a Flixbus driver had tested the method of mechanically modifying a double decker four years ago in Berlin ...
