SBB starts process to acquire 325 new EMU sets

Martin Baumann

SBB have started the process to acquire new single deck EMU sets for regional trains to be delivered 2025-2035

These are intended to replace 114 NPZ Domino, 15 RABe 520, 110 THURBO GTW units plus 82 FLIRT units built up to 2010. Also included are the 4 RABe 525 units used on the Martigny-Orsieres line.

(Eisenbahn Amateur 1/2020)

What is it with the earlier FLIRTs that they are already due for replacement?

SBB thinks that EMU should be used during 25 years and then be replaced.

... but FLIRTS built before 2010 hardly qualify as 25 years old ?

Who will be in the running? Stadler, Siemens and Bombardier or will they open it up to others as well? Will the new trainsets have to be compatible with other types?

AFAIK it is open to everyone. So I would expect bids from Hitachi and Talgo as well…

I would think that the interchangeability of parts would be an important factor in choosing the manufacturer of new trains.
There is also the issue of driver training on standardized models as opposed to a series of different trainsets.

Before we do not know what specifically Alstom complained about, everything is speculation.

OTOH, it is a bit part of the game that the losing parties place a complaint, because there is always something (more or less obscure) which they can base it on. And, one must understand, that an order of this size will exclude the losing parties from the market for many years.
